There’s no such thing as “snow days” in the real world.
I envy you students in your sweatpants.

“In fact, to every young person listening tonight who’s contemplating their career choice: If you want to make a difference in the life of our nation; if you want to make a difference in the life of a child – become a teacher. Your country needs you.”
I met today’s 5 p.m. deadline successfully, so I’m rewarding myself by wasting a few minutes on tumblr, all to say:
There’s something so magical about returning to the office from a brief walk to a nearby coffee shop downtown in the light rain and, upon sitting back down at your desk, you hear Simon & Garfunkel playing.
It’s those little things, that make me so, so,...
Earlier tonight I ate the grapefruit previously seen in an earlier post of mine.
I tried to like it; I really did. I’m very grapeful (ahaha) for the local Boone resident that grew that piece of fruit and for the person who cared enough to share it with me…
…however, I have decided that I do not like grapefruits very much at all, even with sugar on top.

Update: “Figure out this whole graduate school thing” day did not go so well.
Frustration culminated into a bowl (maybe two, if I’m being honest) of Moose Tracks ice cream; then I curled up with my Appalachian Snuggie and a stuffed animal and, pretending I was a little kid again, I feel asleep for an hour.
Practice charity without holding in mind any conceptions about charity, for...

Today is “figure out this whole graduate school thing” day.
Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify, simplify.

An hour-and-a-half long staff meeting (all three of us) smacked me in the face today – it’s heartbreaking seeing something so wonderful and so meaningful to the community struggle and fall apart because of money – please, please, please support local businesses. That means food, coffee, clothing, and, of course, local news…it’s the only way that many of us can survive.
The weather channel is playing Lady Gaga right now as its background music.

Kirk Cameron is right down the street from me. No lie.
I made it to work around 10:30 this morning to find no one in the office. The door was locked, even, with a note that said, “Be back in 5 minutes.” I let myself in via the side door, and walked into an office with a phone ringing off the hook. The third phone call I took was in regards to a classified ad, something I do not deal with – but before I could explain that to the person on...

I have a story. It’s a small story, but it’s a story nonetheless. Perhaps it poses a bit of a challenge, or at least a challenge for myself.
Today after school I was kinda thirsty, and, since it’s a long drive from Swannanoa to Marshall, I figured I might stop to get some pop somewhere. Since I’m…
Follow my sister. She’s a happy and positive person (even though her...

hello, tumblr. i didn’t miss you this weekend because i was with some of the lovely people in my life, but now that i am back in a place where they are missing i have returned for the time being.
goal for the week: rescue my photo equipment from my subaru and use it, even if it’s just a self-portrait – i will, will, will.
fixing my eyes on the unseen, and not the seen
i heard a joke...
Cleaning out my computer. I found two pages containing one long sentence written for a creative writing class. I never turned it in, because it was way too personal to read to a group of college juniors and seniors who got off on critiquing people’s words and dumbing them down to something they thought they understood but never really would.
I miss writing like that. What if everyone could...

So far, I can tell today will be wonderful because:
1) I had a 30-minute dance party to Kid Cudi, Bassnectar and Crystal Castles in my room while getting ready for work;
2) I acquired tomato soup for lunch;
3) I was greeted by a very fluffy and excited dog when I walked into the office today;
4) Tonight will bring more good food and UNO battles in the Baker-Penland-Cody household;
and 5) I...
I don’t care that I just spend $7 on a burrito, I love Black Cat and it was just what I needed to escape from work for an hour. Oh, Don’t-Be-A-Jerk Burrito with tofu, you are so wonderful.
Black Cat is one place I will miss terribly when I leave Boone. Mostly because of their tofu, and mostly because they give you giant oversized toy cars to keep at your table so they know what order...
Word (Term) of the Day: “Lisztomania,” simply because I’m on a Phoenix kick.
This is one of the most interesting things I have ever read.

I woke up in Boone this morning and settled back into my routine with coffee and a bagel and my space heater at work.
This town is a snowy wreck (surprise!), but I feel like there’s not as much snow out there as they say there is; maybe I’m just getting used to it.
Also, in what can only be described as “divine intervention,” my roommate received a Zen garden for...
